If you have made the decision to become a Certified Nursing Assistant then you are probably wondering what CNA training classes are like. These classes are unique because you will be in a classroom doing textbook work, and you will also be doing hands on clinical work. But both of these things work together to give you the tools you need to pass your certification exam.
You can get Certified Nursing Assistant training at your local college or at the local hospital or nursing home. In some areas of the country, the Red Cross will offer CNA training. The tuition for these classes will vary depending on the where you receive your training. So what types of things will you be learning in these classes?
The curriculum for CNA training classes will vary from state to state. However, the basics that are taught are universal. In the classroom, you will learn how to spot abuse and neglect of patients and what to do about it. You will also learn communication skills, universal precautions, the importance of nutrition and hydration and how to maintain a safe environment for the patient. You will also learn about patients’ rights and the importance of keeping all information about the patient private.
The clinical training will show you how to safely life and transfer patients from bed to chair or vise versa. You will learn how to maintain a clean environment, how to bathe a patient and how to get them on and off the bedpan. You will also learn how to do proper catheter care and why that is so important. The clinical part of the classes is meant to give you some hands on experience before you are turned loose to do it on your own.
As a Certified Nursing Assistant, you are the person that is the eyes and the ears of the nurse. You are able to spot any changes in the patient’s condition because you are the one that spends the most time with the patient. This makes you a very important part of the nursing team.
Take some time to research the CNA training classes that are offered in your area. If you need help making your choice you can talk to a counselor at the local college. He or she will be able to help you make the right decision.
